SAVE 30% OFF YOUR DOG’S 4DX SNAP TEST (HEARTWORM & TICK-BORNE DISEASE TEST)

WHEN YOU PURCHASE 6 MONTHS OF HEARTWORM PREVENTION FOR HIM/HER BEFORE JUNE 15TH, 2019!

April is "Prevention of Lyme Disease in Dogs Month" and "National Heartworm Awareness Month" here in North America!

Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes. When carrier mosquitoes bite a dog, they inject tiny Heartworm larvae (aka babies) into the dog's bloodsteam. These microscopic larvae eventually settle in the dog's heart, where they can grow to be 30 cm long! That's the size of a standard ruler! When adult Heartworms produce new larvae, the larvae circulate in the dog's blood and are picked up by biting mosquitoes. The carrier mosquito bites a new victim and the cycle begins again.

Here in Manitoba our temperatures are optimal for Heartworm larvae to survive within the carrier mosquitoes. Although some years have less mosquitoes than others here in Manitoba, all it takes is one bite for a dog to become infected with Heartworm disease.

Once infected the dog may not begin to show symptoms before it's too late and this disease has become life threatening. Symptoms depend on how many worms are living in the dogs heart. Dogs with many worms typically develop serious heart, lung, liver and kidney problems, with symptoms such as weight loss, coughing, fever, poor haircoat, and inability to tolerate exercise. Dog with heavy infestations will usually die unless the disease is treated. Treatment for this disease costs upwards of $1800 and cure is not guaranteed. An ounce of prevention is truly worth a pound of cure.

Here in Manitoba we live in an endemic area for Heartworm, and this is why we recommend that all dogs be tested using the 4Dx Snap Test each Spring to test for exposure prior to beginning a preventative medication. This test also screens for 3 prevalent diseases transmitted by ticks (Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis).

To aid in preventing Heartworm disease, Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases such as Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis in our canine patients we have chosen to offer:

30% off our 4Dx Snap Test when you purchase 6 months worth (recommended amount for use from June 1st to November 1st) of Heartworm prevention medication for your dog.

Please Note: Appointment for the 4Dx Test must be booked prior to June 15th, 2019 to take advantage of this promotion.

We offer 3 types of Heartworm prevention: a monthly chewable flavoured tablet, a monthly topical oil or a once-a-season (6 month) injection given in-clinic.

To prevent tick-borne diseases our veterinarians also recommend tick/flea preventatives. There are also 3 types of Tick/Flea prevention that we offer: a monthly chewable flavoured tablet, a monthly topical oil or a once every 12 weeks chewable tablet.

Heartworm and Tick/Flea prevention is also recommended for cats, although they are not the typical host of these parasites. There is no current treatment for Heartworm disease in cats so prevention is always recommended. Reminder: mosquitoes can get into your home so indoor cats are still at risk. Tick/flea prevention is recommended for all outdoor cats.
